Section 7 – Menus

The Menus section allows you to create and manage your site’s navigation (main menu, submenus, footer menus, etc.).

Note
Menus are one of the most important structures that help visitors easily navigate your site. The “Main Menu” is usually located at the top of the site, while the “Footer Menu” is located at the bottom.

7.1 – Accessing the Menus Page

  • From the left admin menu, click the “Menus” option.
  • If you have never created a menu before, you will be directed to the Create a New Menu screen.

7.2 – Creating a New Menu and Adding it to the Header

7.2.1 – Creating a Menu

  1. From the left admin menu, click the “Menus” option.
  2. If no menu has been created yet, or if you want to create a new one, the “Create a New Menu” screen will appear.
  3. Enter a name in the “Menu Name” field (e.g., “Main Menu”).
  4. From the “Add Menu Items” section on the left, select the items you want to add (Pages, Posts, Categories).
  5. Once finished, click the “Create Menu” button in the bottom-left corner to save your menu.

7.2.2 – Adding the Created Menu to the Header

For this action, your website must have at least one Menu. After the Create a Menu process is completed;

  1. From the left admin menu, click “Breakdance > Headers“.
  2.  Under the “TEMPLATE” column, hover over the “Header” title (e.g., “Main Header”) and click “Edit in Breakdance” button. Here, the previously created “Header” will appear.
  3. In the panel that appears, click the “Add” button on the left section.
  4. You will see a panel containing many elements. In this panel, search for “WP Menu” in the “Search elements” field, find it, and add it.
  5. Here you need to select a menu. To do this, from the left side go to Menu → Choose a menu and select the menu you want. After completing all adjustments, click the “Save” button at the top right.

7.3 – Adding Items to a Menu

You can add the following items to your menu:

  • Pages: Static pages (e.g., About Us, Contact)
  • Posts: A specific blog post
  • Categories: Blog category archive
  • Custom Links: External links or custom URLs (e.g., https://… or an in-page #anchor)

Steps:

  1. Open the item type from the left panel (Pages/Posts/Categories/Custom Links)..
  2. Select the items you want to add (for Custom Links, enter the URL and Link Text).
  3. Click Add to Menu.
  4. The items will appear in the list on the right.
  5. After completing the process, click the “Save Menu” button at the bottom of the page. If you do not do this, the changes you made to the menu will not be saved.

7.4 – Ordering and Hierarchy (Submenus)

A submenu is a nested item under a main menu item that links to more detailed content.

You can freely arrange the order and hierarchy of menu items:

  1. Drag-and-Drop Management: Move items up or down using drag-and-drop. If you place an item slightly to the right of another, it will become a submenu. Follow these steps:
    • Open the item type from the left panel (Pages/Posts/Categories/Custom Links).
    • Select the items you want to add (for Custom Links, enter the URL and Link Text).
    • Click Add to Menu.
    • Drag and position the added item where you want it. (Örn: Adding “Digital Marketing” as a submenu under the “Service Areas” menu).
    • Click the “Save Menu” button at the bottom of the page. If you do not do this, the changes you made to the menu will not be saved.

  1. Selecting a Parent Menu Item: Alternatively, you can assign a parent item by opening the dropdown arrow next to a menu item and choosing the “Menu Parent” field. Follow these steps:
    • Open the item type from the left panel (Pages/Posts/Categories/Custom Links).
    • Select the items you want to add (e.g., under “Posts,” add “Digital Marketing Trends”).
    • Click Add to Menu.
    • Open the dropdown arrow next to the added item and select under which item it should appear (e.g., Blog).
    • Click the “Save Menu” button at the bottom of the page. If you do not do this, the changes you made to the menu will not be saved.

7.5 – Renaming a Menu

  1. From the left admin menu, click the “Menus” option.
  2. At the top of the menu, edit the Menu Name (e.g., “Main Menu” → “Main Menu – 1”).
  3. At the bottom of the page, click the “Save Menu” button. If you do not do this, the changes you made to the menu will not be saved.

7.6 – Deleting an Item from a Menu

  1. From the left admin menu, click the “Menus” option.
  2. Open the dropdown arrow next to the item you want to remove.
  3. Click the “Remove” option.
  4. At the bottom of the page, click the “Save Menu” button. If you do not do this, the changes you made will not be saved.

7.7 – Deleting a Menu Entirely

  1. From the left admin menu, click “Menus“.
  2. At the bottom of the page, click “Delete Menu“.
  • This will permanently delete the menu and cannot be undone.

7.8 – Screen Options

At the top-right of the Menus page, the Screen Options menu allows you to enable or disable additional options:

a) Screen Elements:
Choose which content types can be added to menus (Pages, Posts, Categories, Custom Links, Tags). Selected options will appear in the Add Menu Items section.

b) Advanced Menu Properties:
This section shows additional settings that pop up within the items you add to the menu.

  • Link Target: Open link in a new tab.
  • Title Attribute: Add a tooltip to the menu item.
  • CSS Classes: Apply custom styling (e.g., button style).
  • Link Relationship (XFN): Define relationships between links (for advanced users).
  • Description: Show a short description under the menu item (theme-dependent).

Tip
For beginners, it is best to enable only basic elements (Pages, Posts) in Screen Options to simplify the process.
